The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is a strategic cargo airlifter used by the United States Air Force. It is capable of rapid strategic delivery of troops and cargo to main operating bases or directly to forward bases in the deployment area. The maximum gross takeoff weight is 585,000 lb. The Globemaster fulfills some of the duties formerly carried out by the C-5 Galaxy, freeing up the C-5 fleet for larger, more outsize cargo.
