In New York City: The Empire State Building. Construction on the skyscraper began on March 17, 1930 and quickly reached a peak labor force of 3,000 men. The building's framework rose at an astonishing rate of 4.5 stories per week. Masonry work began in June of 1930 and was completed on November 13 of the same year. The official opening was May 1st, 1931, when President Hoover pressed a button at the White House in Washington, D.C. to turn on the Empire State Building's lights. The building is recognized as a National Historic Landmark by the National Parks Services.
