Jackknife Bridge

This Jackknife Bridge, known as B&O Bascule Bridge No. 463, was built in 1956 to span the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio. It has a main trunnion bascule span of 255 feet long and a clear channel distance of about 231 feet, and carries a single track on the 22-foot width of the trusses.

This photo is looking straight up from the base of the fixed end. The bridge (on the right) is in the open position; a weighted lever arm (on the left) balances the weight of the bridge. The bridge is located just north of the Detroit-Superior Viaduct, behind the Powerhouse and near the Nautica Stage.
