An angel's head, carved in stone at the entrance to Mission San Jose in San Antonio, Texas. The mission is best known for its ornate carvings such as this one.

Also called the Queen of the Missions, San Jose is the largest of the San Antonio missions. It was founded in 1720 and was almost fully restored to its original design in the 1930s. Mission San Jose was named for Saint Joseph and the Marques de San Miguel de Aguayo, the governor of the Province of Coahuila and Texas at the time. It was built on the banks of the San Antonio river several miles to the south of the earlier and more famously known mission, The Alamo (San Antonio de Valero).
