This famous sculpture of a seated Abraham Lincoln is at the center of the Lincoln Memorial chamber in Washington, D.C. (adjacent to the Korean War Veterans Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall). Daniel Chester French carved the 19 foot tall statue from 28 blocks of white Georgia marble. The monument was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 30, 1922.

Directly behind the Lincoln statue, the words of Royal Cortissoz are carved into the wall: IN THIS TEMPLE AS IN THE HEARTS OF THE PEOPLE FOR WHOM HE SAVED THE UNION THE MEMORY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN IS ENSHRINED FOREVER.
