Lightning bolt, striking at night. Lightning is created when a negatively charged storm cloud passes over a positively charged object on the ground. When the two meet, an electrical current is formed with a flash of light and heat. The heat from lightning can exceed 40,000 degrees (hotter than the surface of the sun). Thunder is caused by the superheated air surrounding the lightning bolt.
